DevOps Meetup #20 @InVision

Information

It’s a been while since our last meetup, back when people didn’t have to wear masks due to a pandemic. We hope you’re all doing well and that we’ll get a chance to meet again in 2023 for the first DevOps & Infrastructure Meetup in almost 3 years!

Between 2015-17 we were proudly hosted by sipgate until we switched locations to InVision until the Covid-induced hiatus in 2020. To kickstart the next iteration of this meetup we’ll be rotating between InVision and sipgate next year, starting at InVision in January and sipgate in February. (Both locations are around ~600m from each other.)

We’re already busy prepping some potential talks for you but we’re also open to welcome anyone who wants to take the stage. Please reach out to Daniel Heitmann if you’d like to give a talk!

Talk #1: Let Karpenter manage our nodes! (by Niclas Mietz)

Scaling Kubernetes Nodes to all needs is a challenging exercise. Users need to adapt the compute capacity to work with auto-scaling efficiently. Other traps are just around the corner: Volumes with different availability zones or scaling nodes after prioritization. The problem gets more complex when the requirement that all teams have access to the resources when needed the most - is for production deployments and critical windows. Karpenter joined the cloud-native landscape to tackle these challenges. It observes the resource requests of unscheduled pods and takes over the decision-making process to spawn new nodes and much more. Join this talk to learn about the challenges in high-performance environments with Kubernetes and auto-scaling, and dive into a hands-on demonstration of Karpenter. Expect best practices in scaling workloads, ready to apply to your production environments.
